Services

There are at least four levels of manuscript editing—some people argue there are more. And the lines between them are blurry, depending on who you ask. Each editor has their own approach and, to be honest, it took a while for me to pinpoint mine.

I calculate my rates on a per-project basis, which I think benefits both parties. You will see the total cost upfront, saving you from the inconvenience of having to count words or trying to compare the hourly rates of different editors.

Each project is unique. Some manuscripts require more editing than others. I offer a complimentary sample edit of up to 1,000 words to help us estimate the amount of time needed and the approximate cost.

More on Working Together

After more than ten years of editing, I offer fair rates based on:

  • My experience
  • My training
  • Industry standards

*Rates are guidelines and are subject to change.

*Once we reach an agreement for my services, I ask for a deposit of 50% upfront. The balance is due upon receipt of the final edited document, unless we have discussed an alternative payment plan.

Sample Project #1

A combination of line editing followed by copy editing.

  • I complete two passes and return the draft with queries/suggested edits, including a separate style sheet.
  • You return the revised version to me with changes accepted or rejected.
  • I make basic copy edits, with no substantive changes.
  • This includes a minimum of one pass plus a read-aloud.
  • I return the document to you for final proofreading and formatting.

Sample Project #2

This is copy editing ONLY and might be your best option if time is a concern. If you’re confident that your plot details, dialogue, etc., are satisfactory, then you could bypass the line edit and request a copy edit, arguably the most important step in the process because it fixes the glaring errors that turn off most readers.

  • I look for three Cs: correctness, clarity, and consistency.
  • I complete two regular passes, followed by a read-aloud.
  • I will return it to you for final proofreading and formatting.
  • Upon request, I can send you one copy showing all edits and comments, plus one “clean” copy with all changes accepted.

Please Note:

I do not edit any material once it has been published.
